Rain King

Rain King for Mathias Svalina

& if it is rain then what follows is more rain & if it is rain then what follows is the memory of rain & if it is the memory of rain then what follows is the sound of rain & if it is the sound of rain then what follows is the silence after the rain has stopped & after the rain has stopped the silence lingers & if the silence lingers then unspoken sentences ghost thru the air & if ghost sentences linger & if in the lingering air an unspoken apology arises from dormant feelings & if dormant feelings arise in an unapologetic land & if an unapologetic land erases an ocean between us & if you were to stand on one side of an emptied ocean & I on the other side & if you were to shout from your side of the emptied space & if I were to shout from the other side of an emptied space a ghost sentence unspoken arrives & if upon the arrival of a ghost sentence that changes from day to day & if the day continues to change let the children play & if we on our sides of the chasm fill the space between with playing children then ghosts applaud songs of young throats & if moved by the songs of children & if rememorized by ghosts twirling here & there & if a gerund & colon were to part the lips of our skepticism & if in the erasure of skepticism is a memory of rain then we will stretch across the chasm hands reaching for hands & if in this act of love & if in the silence there is repeated acts of love while the children sing while the children play then the memory of rain remains present & if it is rain then what follows is more rain & if it is rain that what follows is the memory of rain & if it is the memory of rain then what follows is the sound of rain & if it is the sound of rain then what follows is the silence after the rain has stopped & after the rain has stopped I will meet you in the middle of nowhere & we will set our troubles to song & play as children

  1. If only!

Ghost is a such a great verb for sentences to do.

  2. I underlined this whole poem. Plus it brought me back to Henderson the Rain King. Love!
